Corning NY

One area of Steuben county not to be missed is Downtown Corning.

What to Do

The Gaffer District in Downtown Corning is a picturesque section of town named for the glass smiths that put Corning on the map. This downtown area is filled with walkable, picture-perfect streetscapes, small businesses, arts and culture and delicious opportunities to explore.

 We were obsessed with the elaborate window displays and the most delicious scones at Laurabelle’s Bakery, we loved the cozy ambience and delicious lattes at Soul Full Cup Coffee House  and the homemade ice cream at Dippity Do Dahs…In between snacks, we recommend popping into our favorite Corning boutique, Heathered Gray where we stocked up on gifts and souvenirs from our visit. 

Corning Museum of Glass

Have you ever seen something so beautiful that it took your breath away? That’s what you can expect at the Corning Museum of Glass. This world-renowned museum is home to the largest collection of glass art in the world, including pieces from some of history’s most famous artists.

We loved the live glass blowing demonstration for nerding out about the actual process and the interactive exhibits that bring you into the quirky science and unique history of all things glass! Whether you’re a glass enthusiast, a fan of Blown Away on Netflix or just looking for a fun day exploring on your own or out with your family, the Corning Museum of Glass is definitely worth your visit!

Where to Eat

Hand + Foot

If you ask locals for their recommendations, Hand + Foot comes up again and again! This one of a kind bar and restaurant takes pride in sourcing their food and beverages from local craft and micro suppliers and transforming ingredients into craveable and beautiful dishes.

Known in town for their unique and stunning cocktails and fun takes on fresh food, this community hub serves up so much more than a delicious lunch..but if you’re looking for a delicious lunch, we highly recommend you start here. 

Nickel’s Pit BBQ

Also located in Downtown Corning is the 2nd location of Nickel’s Pit BBQ. With a flagship spot in Watkins Glen, the Finger Lakes region can’t get enough of the rock and roll vibes and local farm to table meats that Nickel’s Pitt is serving up!

With so many options we opted to share one of their signature platters so we could try ALL of the meats! The wings with their perfect texture and smoky flavor were a sure favorite but everything from the brisket to beers was made in NY perfection.

Where to Stay

Hilton Garden Inn

 The Hilton Garden Inn is the perfect landing place for groups of friends, families and travelers of all kinds. With gathering places throughout the hotel for groups to get together, plot and plan, we love the cozy atmosphere and the killer location. You can walk out of the front lobby and be in the heart of downtown with a quick and scenic walk across the pedestrian bridge.

Hammondsport NY

Another Steuben County destination is found on Keuka Lake in the small but mighty town of Hammondsport. Located at the Southern tip of the Lake We love the storybook setting that the scenic backdrop provides to this charming and historic area filled with shops, dining and wineries.

Glenn H. Curtiss Museum

This hidden wonder in upstate New York will take you on a journey through time. History buffs will tell you that although Aviation was born in North Carolina it grew up and went wild here in Hammondsport NY. Named for Hammondsport’s own aviation and motorcycling pioneer, the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum is an adventure in exploration for curious souls of all ages. In this Motorcycle and Aviation museum you’ll get to see some of the most impressive aircrafts and motor vehicles from the earliest days of transportation all the way up to modern times. Celebrating the innovation and evolution in transportation and the rich and storied history of invention, this museum is a treasure trove of life-sized artifacts and exhibits all collected under one roof for you to explore!

We LOVE learning about the roots and histories of modern day life and found so much nostalgia and fun.  If you’re looking for a unique travel destination, a fun place to explore indoors or just want to learn more about the history of travel and transport, this museum is definitely worth checking out.

Timberstone Grill

After exploring the lake and town square, we recommend you pop into Timberstone Grill for the cozy and inviting atmosphere and delicious regional cuisine. With a warm, natural and inviting space, this is the kind of place that makes you want to come in and stay a while- Craft cocktails, local beers and wines and a delicious farm to table menu make that easy to do! We loved the local tomatoes and creamy mozzarella, the brisket mac and cheese and a burger that requires a few extra napkins!

Finger Lakes Region

We’ve had so much fun and experienced so much wonder exploring upstate NY this season. From the Seneca Wine Trail to the surrounding small towns with BIG flavor, the Finger Lakes and Upstate New York regions offer so much to travelers and wonderstruck wanderers! Has something for everyone! Whether you’re looking for a place to get away and relax or take in some incredible sights, you won’t be disappointed. Corning and Hammondsport are full of charming shops to explore along with plenty of outdoor activities and breathtaking views. If time permits, do your best to make it up there for a memorable weekend get-away!
